The most amazing new knowledge about the human brain is that it has the ability to grow, change, re-arrange all our thoughts and mental processes from birth to death. We have a “plastic” brain that can do remarkable things such as cope with/and reorganize all the activities that were done in one area that is now damaged and learn to do them in another area.

Areas of the brain that are normally associated with speech can be used sight or hearing.

The old thinking was that we were born with a brain divided up into little boxes and each were allocated a specific job, this has all changed with the latest research. Click on the image opposite to watch a short video by Dr. Norman Doidge.

The first lesson we need to learn is never to say never! We cannot tell what is possible and what is not possible. The second lesson is that we can change the way we think, feel or behave in remarkable ways with a little help and effort. The third lesson is that despite the fact that we function much of our waking time by habits learned since childhood, all these habitually programmed activities can be reprogrammed.

Myth #1 Hypnotherapy allows the therapist to take control of my mind.Quite the reverse, hypnotherapy allows you to take control of your mind and the therapies helps you do this for yourself.

Myth #2 Hypnosis is like having a general anaesthetic, or being unconscious and not knowing what’s going on.When we are in a hypnotic state is like it is like the daydreaming state we experience many times during every day. We are often not consciously aware of everything we do all the time, otherwise we will be overwhelmed.

Myth #3 Stress is something we just have to learn to live with, we can’t do much about it.
We can learn ways of reducing the impact of stress or lives by learning effective coping strategies.

Myth #4 I have always had a fear of spiders/public speaking/open spaces, I don’t think that can change.
Most of our fears can be based on an association experienced a long time ago that is not relevant to the fear itself. NLP and hypnosis are extremely effective in dealing with fears and phobias.

Myth #5 I have always had an addiction to “whatever”, I can’t see how my work can change that. Old habits and patterns of behaviour are well-established.
Our addictions or cravings are, in part a minor problem, that can be retrained to minimise the effect.

Myth #6 Hypnotherapy won’t work for me as I know I wouldn’t be a good subject for it. It is rare for clients not to benefit from hypnotherapy with the right approach.
